Download IrfanView
IrfanView is a simple graphics utility that makes it possible to modify images
so they are suitable for the internet. Note: If you are able to modify images
with your existing software, there is no need to download IrfanView.
If you
are not sure how to alter an image's properties, download IrfanView from the
link above.
Download
will take approximately 3-4 minutes on a 56k modem.
Once the
software is downloaded double click the setup icon.
When Welcome
to IrfanView Setup appears, click next.
When Version Details appears, click next.
When Associate with IrfanView appears, select all and click next.
When Ready to Install appears, click next.
When Installation Successful appears, click done.
Opening an Image in IrfanView
Click on
File Menu, Open. A dialog box allows you to open a file for use in IrfanView.
Use the
Look In dialog box to locate the file you want, or type in a file name.
Files of Type allows you to limit your choice by showing only the type
of file you want (i.e. jpeg). The default is Common IrfanView files.
If you check
Preview active, a single click on an image filename will display a small
thumbnail. Another click brings the file into the viewer. You can also double
click the filename.
If there
are multiple images, a dialog box will allow you to choose a single image. Click
the names for previews. Click Accept when you find the one you want.
To close
without opening a file, click Cancel, or click the 'X' in the upper right
hand corner.
After opening
your file, you will see an image; or you will get an error message if the filetype
is not supported by IrfanView. If you open a large image, you can use the scrollbars
to see all parts of it.
Image Information in IrfanView
Click on
Image Menu, Information. A dialog box will open showing the following details:
- File
name
- Directory
name
- Compression
method must be jpg
- Current

- Current

- File
disk size cannot be over 100kb
- Image
memory size (in kb - decompressed)
- Current
directory index
- File
date/time
If settings
are incorrect or you wish to resize an image follow these steps:
Changing Compression or Resizing of an Image in IrfanView
Click on menu Image, Resize/Resample. A dialog box allows you to choose
the new size for your image. The first number is width, the second height, both
in pixels. Leave the Preserve Aspect Ratio box checked, type in one number
and the other will be calculated for you.
Optimal
internet screen images are no wider than 800 pixels. This should fill a normal
screen's width with the image you are importing. Reducing this number will proportionately
have the image reduce in size across and down the screen.
Resampling
an image often improves the quality, especially when enlarging it. Enlarging
without resampling can result in a blurry image. If desired, change either number
to your new pixel size, then click OK to resize the image. This action
can be undone several times, or reversed by clicking Undo in the Edit
menu.
To save
the image as a different file type or filename, use the Save As option.
Click the file type's drop down arrow, and a list of file types will appear.
Select JPEG. When you save, the file will be converted to the new format
or name.
Ensure the
filename doesn't contain any blank spaces or special characters such as (*@#$%?).
